10 by 10 PRESS RELEASE

Mina Dresden Gallery is pleased to present “10x10,” a group exhibition of paintings and photographs by ten San Francisco-based artists reunited two years after their selection by Le Génie de la Bastille to exhibit in Paris. The work will be on display from June 11-30, with an artist’s reception on June 23 from 7-9pm.

In 2005, nineteen San Francisco artists were welcomed by officials from the City of Paris and the U.S. Embassy for the “Americans in Paris” art exhibition in France. The artists were handpicked from a group of nearly 1,500 artists for the rare and exclusive opportunity.

Focusing mainly on abstract painting and photography for their exhibition at the Mina Dresden Gallery this month, the select group includes Annie Margaret Arrasmith, Cheryl Finfrock, April Hankins, Gina Jacupke, Andrzej Michael Karwacki, Michele King, Silvia Poloto, Ellen Rosenthal, Ari Salomon, and Catherine Small.

The artists have enjoyed critical success both nationally and internationally. Among them are April Hankins, whose abstract paintings and collages are included in permanent collections at Harvard, Yale, and the New York Public Library, and Silvia Poloto, who has been selected to represent Brazil in several of the annual Symposiums on Modern Art in Romania, Bulgaria, UAE, and elsewhere.

Michele King, who creates elegant and organic imagery on surfaces such as birch and aluminum, describes her work as an exploration of “intangible qualities that capture my attention. These qualities have distinctions that are difficult to make but important to me. My paintings are inspired moments and feelings--mostly a reflection of the unconscious world."

If Michele King borrows from the natural world to express her sense of the intangible, it could be said that Ari Salomon pursues a similar exploration through his ongoing study of artificial light. Ari explains that in “Motion Studies,” his current body of work, “Motion and time are rendered visible, graphically revealing the latent rhythms and patterns of the material world. . .”

“10 x 10” brings ten prolific and thoughtful artists together to engage the public one more time at Mina Dresden Gallery. The work will display through June 30.
