Al's Comics
1803 Market St. San Francisco
4-10-08, 1-4pm

I will be promoting the release of the second issue of The Boy Who Made Silence on Saturday, May 10 from 1-4pm with a signing event at Al's Comics in San Francisco (1803 Market St.).

I will have both versions of issue one (5MF and AAM/Markosia) along with issue two available and will be happy to sign copies. If you have a previous copy that you would like signed, you are more than welcome to bring it in.

In addition, I will have a limited supply of the original art from the book on sale. The going rate for original pages is $300, as well as individual panels on sale from $30-$75. In addition, Artist X-Change in San Francisco has new art from the series on display in the gallery.

Issue 2 is now available at comic shops everywhere and is available to order online as well. Some of you will be glad to know that Last Gasp is now distributing the original self-published edition and will be distributing subsequent issues in limited quantities. This will help place the book in more indy-friendly shops, which I know most of you on my mailing list probably prefer.

If you need more information about the signing, please contact Allen Kizziah at alscomics2005 at yahoo dot com

Press Release

Winner of the coveted Xeric Grant, the debut issue of The Boy Who Made Silence was originally self-published by internationally exhibited painter and creator Joshua Hagler. The series now has a home at AAM Markosia, publisher of such titles as King Kong, Starship Troopers and indie fav Headlocked.

In The Boy Who Made Silence, deaf child Nestor Gudfred inexplicably creates utter silence around him, which compels the people near him into each other's pasts and memories. As his religious rural community looks to him as a prophet, the story follows Nestor and a diverse cast of richly imagined characters as he comes of age, falls in love, and begins a search for his father.

The series has received advance praise from many of the best talents in the industry:

"Hagler's debut issue is an impressive start. Not only can Hagler paint, but he has the proper focus on telling the story. It's subtle, understated work. And it's beautifully reproduced -- the colours are rich and vibrant, in a way that makes everything else l've read this week look washed out and cheaply printed." -- Paul O'Brien, X-Axis

"Brilliant, beautiful, original, authentic, and inspiring! One of the best comic book reading experiences I've had in a long time." -- David Mack, author and artist of Kabuki

"In his first work... Hagler finds his true voice. And this is just the art alone, to say nothing of the moody and reflective impressionistic story [upon which] he effortlessly floats us along..." -- Sam Kieth, author and artist of The Maxx, Zero Girl, Ojo

END OF THE YEAR UPDATE FROM GERMANY!

Posted on 2007.12.23 at 06:12
So, before my wife and I left for Europe to spend time with family here for the next three weeks, I was working like a dog until the AM hours on a regular basis. Despite all the work, some things I simply did not have time for, such as promoting some important events I'm a part of as well as doing the usual updates. So this is my unfancy, remote way of doing it.

Most importantly I want to send out my profound thanks to everyone who helped support my work this year, especially after our fire in March. Because of that support, we were not only able to make it through the hard times, but we were also able to transcend the many social and economic burdens of treading the unrecommended murk of art making. Though without a permanent studio for four months, I like to think progress was made in the quality of the work presented this year and that you have hopefully received something of value from it, whatever that might be. So, again I thank everyone who has been a part of it in large and small ways.

Below are some current events, publications, and upcoming opportunities I'd like you to know about:

BERKELEY ARTISAN'S OPEN STUDIOS

Posted on 2007.11.13 at 23:21
Notable Art Link of the Day: http://www.berkeleyartisans.com

If you're in the Bay Area, I cordially invite you to come out for one of four weekends in which I will be opening 5 Mined Fields Studio to the public for the first time.

Here are the dates:

November 24th and 25th, 11-6pm daily
December 1-2,8-9,15-16, 11-6pm daily

Here is the place:

5 Mined Fields Studio
2745 Tenth St.
Berkeley

Enjoy light refreshments, paintings, illustrations, original art from The Boy Who Made Silence, and of course copies of the book and poster.

I am doing this as a part of Berkeley Artisan's Holiday Open Studios. Started originally by Susan Brooks seventeen years ago, Berkeley Artisan's is an annual month-long open studio event that brings artists from all over Berkeley who sign up, puts them on a map, and gets them all to work together for the mutual benefit of getting you all to spend your money on something interesting for the holidays.

As you know, I just moved to Berkeley a few months ago and have since discovered that hundreds of artists live in my area, which is full of studios, live/work lofts, and warehousy structures that house things like foundries, fx studios, and puppetry workshops.

Getcherself a map ritechair: http://www.berkeleyartisans.com/map_page.html
I'm #25, Holmes.

So come on out and do a tour of our humble Berkeley neighborhood. Think of it as a treasure hunt. It will be a lovely time.
